CEF-Digital calls for smart cable systems and gateways closed

The calls for Digital Global Gateways (Studies and Works) and Smart Cable Systems closed on 30 June 2026. They received a total of 59 proposals involving 73 partners from 20 countries. 

Reliable and secure digital connectivity as well as smart capabilities of submarine cables are key for the future of Europe and its strategic autonomy. Submarine cables and other fibre backbone networks are the foundation of global digital communications, carrying 99% of the world's internet traffic and connecting Europe with neighbouring regions and international partners.  

With a combined budget of up to € 200 million, the two calls for proposals aim to support the deployment of new connectivity infrastructures, the preparation of future strategic projects, and the strengthening of existing networks. In particular: 

• With the Digital Global Gateways call, the EU will support strategic connectivity projects, including submarine cable systems and other backbone infrastructures that strengthen links in Europe as well as between EU countries and the rest of the world. By supporting both preparatory activities and deployment in priority areas as defined by the Cable Projects of European Interest (CPEI) list, these actions contribute to developing future proof connectivity networks and reinforcing Europe's digital sovereignty.  
• With the Smart Cable Systems call, the EU will focus on upgrading existing submarine cable infrastructures with advanced monitoring and sensing technologies. These solutions can improve the protection and maintenance of critical infrastructure and enable additional applications such as environmental monitoring (e.g. deep-sea temperature, stream changes, etc.) and early detection of potential risks (e.g. earthquakes, tsunamis, etc.). 

The over-subscription rate (50 proposals for Digital Global Gateways and 9 proposals for the upgrade with Smart Cable Systems) shows the strong interest of applicants and highlights the importance of these investments in building a more secure and connected digital Europe.
