On World Earth Day, the urgency of building a climate-neutral, resource-efficient future has never been more apparent. Across Europe, EU-funded research and innovation projects are turning ambition into action, empowering policymakers, industries, and communities to navigate the complex transition towards sustainability. Among these efforts, HaDEA-managed projects AMIGDALA, TRANSIENCE, and CIRAN stand out as prime examples of how science, collaboration, and innovation are shaping Europe’s green future.
- One of the greatest challenges of the European Green Deal is decoupling industrial growth from emissions while maintaining competitiveness. The AMIGDALA project rises to this challenge by developing cutting-edge integrated modelling tools that combine data on energy, trade, materials, and industrial production. These tools simulate realistic pathways to climate neutrality and circularity, helping decision-makers assess how policy measures, investments, and market dynamics interact. By providing evidence-based transition scenarios, AMIGDALA enables stakeholders to avoid costly missteps and identify the most effective strategies for a sustainable industrial transformation.
- While ambition for a circular, climate-neutral economy is high, a critical knowledge gap remains: the lack of comprehensive modelling frameworks that fully capture the interplay between decarbonisation and circular economy strategies. The TRANSIENCE project addresses this by creating an open-source modelling ecosystem (MIC3), integrating economic, industrial, energy, and environmental perspectives. Through stakeholder co-creation and scenario analysis, TRANSIENCE generates actionable pathways for a material-efficient, circular, and climate-neutral European industry. By fostering transparency and cross-sectoral knowledge-sharing, the project ensures that policy and industry decisions are grounded in robust, accessible science.
- CIRAN’s aim is to identify processes that enable balancing economic stability and critical raw materials (CRMs) supply security with social well-being and environmental conservation priorities across the EU. The project fosters innovative policies and frameworks that enable the responsible extraction of CRMs while preserving the delicate balance of the protected ecosystems where they are found. This is particularly relevant considering that CIRAN has identified that approximately 85% of CRMs occurrences are located within 5 kilometres of environmentally protected areas.
A Collective Commitment to a Sustainable Future
These projects exemplify the European Union’s dedication to combating climate change through integrated, science-driven approaches. By enhancing how we model, understand, and implement the transition to circular and climate-neutral industries, they provide the tools, insights, and collaborative frameworks needed to turn policy ambitions into tangible progress.
This World Earth Day, AMIGDALA, TRANSIENCE, and CIRAN serve as a reminder: achieving sustainability is not just about setting targets, it’s about equipping society with the innovation, knowledge, and partnerships to reach them.
