Industry of the Future Award: projects managed by HaDEA among the finalists

R&I Days - Industry of the Future Award

The first Industry of the Future Award ceremony will take place during the European Commission’s annual Research and Innovation Days, on 28 September 2022 at 15:45. The award recognises EU-funded projects whose results make European industry more resilient, sustainable, and human-centric.

A high-level jury consisting of members from industry, civil society, social partners, and academia selected the top three projects out of nearly 60 applications. The finalists will have a unique opportunity to present their projects during the Award ceremony.

Two of the preselected projects were managed by the Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA):

SECOIIAfocused on cybersecurity, which is an important component of the industry’s resilience in the digital age. The project develops solutions for data-driven circular economic business models. It contributes to workers’ health, safety and wellbeing by demonstrating safe and secure human-robot interactions in non-segregated spaces.

SeCollA aimed to secure the digital transition of the manufacturing industry, especially in the fields of aeronautics, automotive and naval construction.

It succeeded in bringing the developed technology to three demonstrations:

  1. aerospace pilot,
  2. automotive pilot
  3. maritime pilot.

It also produced standardisation guidelines for optimizing and controlling process monitoring, through digital twin technology, industrial IoT, Cloud Manufacturing (CMfg) and collaborative robotics and Industrial AI.

SHERLOCK: introduced the latest robotic technologies in production environments, enhancing them with smart mechatronics and Artificial Intelligence-based cognition. It also created efficient Human-Robot Collaboration (HRC) stations that are designed to be safe and guarantee the acceptance and wellbeing of operators.

SHERLOCK succeeded in bringing the developed technologies to four industrial demonstrations:

  1. Industrial modules assembly sector: a low payload collaborative robot, mounted upside down to a linear rail, performed the assembly of large aluminium panels undertaking highly repetitive tasks, collaborating with an operator who performs value adding tasks that require human dexterity.
  2. Aeronautics sector: a mobile dual arm robot assisted in transportation of large composite panels of the aircraft, in collaboration with a human operator, acting as a co-worker.
  3. Renewable energy sector: a high payload collaborative robot performed the manipulation of heavy solar thermal collectors, presenting them to the operator in the most convenient way to install smaller pieces that require human dexterity.
  4. Machine tools building sector: exoskeleton-assisted operators perform the assembly of large CNC machines, supported by AR based instructions.
