Optical Fiber Communication Conference 2023 – meet HaDEA-managed projects working on digital services

OFC 23

The Optical Fiber Communication Conference will take place at the San Diego Conference Centre in San Diego, California between 5-9 March. The OFC draws attendees from all corners of the globe to meet and greet, make connections and move the industry forward.

Discover some of the Horizon 2020 projects managed by HaDEA in the field of optical communications.

TWILIGHT: The project addresses the transformation of data centres in a two-fold approach:
a) it targets the development of terabit high-speed optical transceivers;
b) it introduces novel photonics and electronics co-integration and co-packaging concepts. On top of massive capacity, the technology promises significant energy savings, reduced operating costs and a lower environmental footprint.

Professor Yuqing Jiao represents the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven in project TWILIGHT and will participate in 2 panels:

Topic: “Polarisation-Insensitive Isolators and Circulators on InP Photonics
Location: Room 3 M1C.1
When: 6 March at 08.00 am PST (5.00 pm GTM)

Topic: “The Future of Multi-Terabit Datacenter Interconnects Based on Tight Co-Integration of Photonics and Electronics Technologies
Location: Room 8 Tu3I
When: 7 March from 5.00 pm PST to 1.00 am +1 GTM

INSPIRE: The project aims to improve photonic-integrated circuit technology by combining two photonics technologies in a single platform through wafer-scale, micro-transfer printing technology. Its goal is to strengthen the European manufacturing base by developing and implementing processing steps that are key to removing expensive assembly steps in the realisation of photonic-integrated, circuits-based products.

Project Coordinator Gunther Roelkens will have an invited talk in a panel:

Topic: “Micro-Transfer Printing for Silicon Photonics
Location: Room 1AB
When: 9 March from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm PST (9 hours delay)

Other H2020 projects managed by HaDEA working on optical fiber solutions

SIPHO-G: The project is developing ultrahigh-speed optical modulators and photodetectors for integration into photonic integrated circuits that will push the limits of optical data transmission and accelerate innovation in next-generation optical applications.

POETICS: Future Data centre networks and 5G networks with increased communication bandwidth requirements will rely heavily on the use of optical interconnections that provide Terabit capacity. POETICS aims to develop high-capacity Multi-Chip Modules comprising novel Terabit optical engines and optical switches together with digital switches. POETICS focuses on minimising the electrical interconnect distance between the optical engine and the digital switching chip, and on removing signal conditioning chips and unwanted components.

Background Information

Horizon 2020 was the EU’s multiannual funding programme between 2014 and 2020. H2020 provided Research and Innovation (R&I) funding for multi-national collaboration projects alongside individual researchers and SMEs via special funding instruments. Horizon 2020 was replaced by the Horizon Europe Programme, which will run until 2027.
