Supporting the digital transformation of the EU healthcare sector: 44 new EU4Health direct grants managed by HaDEA in the field of digital health

44 new grants awarded

Digital health infrastructure is key to facilitating secure, efficient and interoperable access to digital health data across Europe, allowing citizens to benefit from healthcare services wherever they are and whenever they need them.

HaDEA is now managing 44 new EU4Health direct grants to EU countries and other countries associated to the EU4Health Programme. They are part of a wider portfolio of projects to support digitalisation in the health sector financed under the EU4H programme. With most of the new projects already underway since December 2023, the objective of the grants is to support EU countries in implementing the future European Health Data Space (EHDS):

  • 23 grants will help launch new electronic cross-border health services under MyHealth@EU. The platform will include services such as e-prescriptions, patient summaries, medical images, laboratory results and clinical documents.
  • 21 grants will facilitate the secondary use of health data in EU countries, for purposes such as research, innovation, personalised medicine and policy-making. HaDEA is organising a joint kick-off meeting  on 17 January 2024 to provide participants with information on grant and financial management and ensure all grants can be implemented smoothly.

Background information

EU4Health, with a budget of €5.3 billion, is the fourth and largest of the EU health programmes. The EU4Health programme goes beyond an ambitious response to the COVID-19 crisis to address the resilience of European healthcare systems. The programme provides funding to national authorities, health organisations and other bodies through grants and public procurement, contributing to a healthier Europe.

HaDEA manages the vast majority of the total EU4Health budget and implements the programme by managing calls for proposals and tenders from 2021 to 2027.
