14 October is World Standards Day, honouring the experts who develop the voluntary technical agreements published as International Standards. The aim of this day is to raise awareness among regulators, industry, and consumers about the importance of standardisation.
This day comes as a reminder to continue the hard work towards standardisation and the use of best solutions for industry. Discover how EU-funded projects managed by HaDEA contributed to progress on desired practices in terms of Safe-by-Design nanomaterials, optimisation of nanomaterial performances in line with industrial requirement, and optimisation of manufacturing energy performance in terms of time and resources:
SbD4Nano aimed to create a new e-infrastructure to guide the development and implementation of approaches and tools supporting the Safe-by-Design (SbD) framework for nanomaterials. The project provided resources to support supply chain setups with minimal hazard (i.e. reduced toxicity), economic cost and optimal technical performance for the nanotechnology sector.
Sabydoma’s first objective was to build high-throughput online platforms where nanomaterials are manufactured and screened at the point of production. The screening signal controls the nanomaterial redesign and production in a feedback loop.
ASINA developed the Safe-by-Design management methodology (the ASINA-SMM), which can be easily adopted by manufactures to deliver nano-enabled products (NEPs) designed to be as safe as possible. The project provided a general roadmap to help maximise the positive impacts of further nano-enabled products, designed to improve environmental quality, health, and wellness.
ECOFACT provided a platform to support manufacturing industries in optimising the energy performance of their production systems, in terms of restrictions such as time and resources.
The project used an innovative approach with a green marketing method based on the concept of energy and the environmental signature of the manufactured products. With its platform, ECOFACT established a multi-service approach tool, for advanced energy-efficient, sustainable processes and manufacturing management.
Background
Horizon 2020 the EU’s multiannual funding programme between 2014 and 2020. H2020 provided Research and Innovation (R&I) funding for multi-national collaboration projects alongside individual researchers and SMEs via special funding instruments. Horizon 2020 is succeeded by Horizon Europe Programme, which will run until 2027.
