The Farm to Fork Strategy is at the heart of the European Green Deal, aiming to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly.
Our food systems account for nearly one-third of global greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, consume large amounts of natural resources, lead to biodiversity loss and negative impacts on people's health (due to both under- and over-nutrition). They do not ensure fair economic returns and sustainable livelihoods for involved actors, in particular for primary producers. These food systems are not sustainable nor resilient in face of crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and therefore need to be redesigned.
The Farm to Fork Strategy aims to accelerate our transition to a sustainable food system. The Strategy presents an action plan, which is composed of 27 specific actions.
HaDEA is responsible for the implementation of several contracts in support to some of these specific actions. This includes the management of grants and procurements contributing to, among other actions:
- The evaluation and revision of the existing animal welfare legislation, including on animal transport and slaughter of animals;
- The revision of EU legislation on food contact materials to improve food safety, ensure citizens’ health and reduce the environmental footprint of the sector;
- The proposal of EU-level targets for food waste reduction.
