African swine fever (ASF) is a deadly viral disease of domestic and wild pigs. In the absence of vaccine or cure, the negative impact of the disease is severe in particular when ASF outbreaks occur in domestic pigs. The disease does not affect other animals nor humans.

In 2021 and 2022, the Commission is awarding €12.6 million and €13.3 million, respectively, to 19 EU countries in order to contribute to:

(i) Prevention of spread of ASF within concerned Member States and to Member States which are currently not infected;
(ii) Reduction of number of ASF outbreaks in domestic pigs.
