African swine fever (ASF) is a deadly viral disease of domestic and wild pigs. In the absence of vaccine or cure the negative impact of the disease is severe, in particular when ASF outbreaks occur in domestic pigs. The disease does not affect other animals nor humans.

In 2023 and 2024, the European Commission awarded €4.7 million to 19 EU countries and €7.9 million to 18 EU countries, respectively, in order to contribute to:

  1. Prevention of spread of ASF within concerned Member States and to Member States which are currently not infected;
  2. Reduction of number of ASF outbreaks in domestic pigs.
