Classical swine fever (CSF) is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs. In order to reduce economic losses caused by CSF or by the disease-related trade restrictions, the Commission and EU countries invested significant efforts and resources to eliminate CSF from the EU.

In May 2023, 37 countries around the world have been recognised free from CSF by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), among which 22 EU countries.

The aim is for all EU countries to maintain a CSF-free status and further reduce the risk of disease reoccurrence, therefore, preventing related economic costs and losses.

In 2023, the Commission has awarded €0.051 million to five EU countries to contribute to the early detection of CSF outbreaks in domestic pigs and wild boars.
