Salmonellosis is a zoonotic disease that can be transmitted to people directly or indirectly by the consumption of contaminated food or water or by contact with infected animals or people.
Salmonellosis is the second most common reported foodborne bacterial gastrointestinal infection in humans in the EU after Campylobacteriosis.
The Commission has awarded €11 million to 24 EU countries in 2023 and €10.5 million to 23 EU countries in 2024 to support the continued reduction of the prevalence of relevant Salmonella serovars in certain poultry populations, in order to protect consumers from this zoonotic foodborne disease.
