Background

The EU Single Market Programme brings together the Union actions in the fields of competitiveness of enterprises, especially SMEs, consumer protection, customers and end-users in financial services, policymaking in financial services and in the plant, animal, food and feed areas.

In the EU, nearly 59 million tonnes of food waste are generated annually with associated costs estimated at 132 billion euro. Fighting food waste is one of the key action strands laid down in the EU’s Farm to Fork Strategy, which aims to make food systems fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly. Reducing food loss and waste is an integral part of the Farm to Fork Strategy action plan, which calls on the Commission to propose, in 2023, legally binding food waste reduction targets to be achieved by Member States by 2030. In doing so, the Commission aims to accelerate the EU’s progress  towards the Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3 of halving per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030.
