The WiFi4EU initiative promotes free Wi-Fi connectivity for citizens and visitors in public spaces throughout Europe.
Funded by the CEF Telecom programme, the initiative was open to municipalities from all EU countries and participating EEA countries (Norway and Iceland). Using the services of local Wi-Fi installation companies, the selected municipalities are receiving vouchers worth €15 000 each to install Wi-Fi hotspots in the "centres of local public life".
Everyone benefiting from connectivity means that it should not matter where you live or how much you earn. We propose to equip every European village and every city with free wireless internet access around the main centres of public life […].
The WiFi4EU vouchers were distributed via four calls for applications in 2018-2020: 8,802 municipalities were selected – i.e. 10% of all municipalities in Europe - for an overall budget of €132 million. More than 70 000 WiFi4EU hotspots have been already installed in public spaces such as:
- Cultural and Touristic sites
- Health Centers/Hospitals
- Stations and transport stops
- Schools, Universities and Libraries
- Parks and squares
- Shopping malls, town & sport halls
The implementation is still ongoing for around 30% of all beneficiaries. Learn more about the 3 steps to take to redeem your WiFi4EU voucher. Check the deadlines and don’t miss the implementation period!
