Classical swine fever (CSF) is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs. In order to reduce economic losses caused by CSF or by the disease-related trade restrictions, the Commission and EU countries invested significant efforts and resources to eliminate CSF from the EU.

Currently 38 countries in the world have successfully eliminated CSF, among which 22 EU countries.

The aim is for all EU countries to maintain a CSF-free status and further reduce the risk of disease reoccurrence, therefore, preventing related economic costs and losses.

In 2021 and 2022, the Commission is awarding €0.36 million and €0.25 million, respectively, to six EU countries to contribute to the early detection of CSF outbreaks in domestic pigs and wild boar and to the documentation of its absence in the EU.
