GAPP Joint Action

On 20-21 January 2022, the final dissemination conference of GAPP (facilitatinG the Authorisation of Preparation Process for blood and tissues and cells) took place in Thessaloniki, Greece and online. The GAPP Joint Action has been co-funded by the third EU health programme (2014-2020) and comprises 24 beneficiaries, from 16 EU countries and 2 non-EU countries.

The first day of the conference underlined the work carried out at EU level on the main objectives of the Joint Action:

  1. Establishing standards and harmonising practices and treatments in the field of Blood, Tissues and Cells (BTC) to ensure EU-wide safety for patients and donors, as well as a high quality of BTC treatments;
  2. Creating a tailored methodology to assess and authorise preparation processes for tissues, cells, reproductive cells and blood products;
  3. Developing an international network of experts that can support EU competent authorities in the assessment and evaluation of these processes.

On the second and final day, conference participants took a closer look at the next steps needed to bridge the gap between science and effective policies that would follow the end of the Joint Action.
