On 28 January 1981, the Council of Europe adopted Convention 108, the first legally binding international instrument on data protection. To commemorate this landmark development, the EU celebrates Data Protection Day every 28 January.

HaDEA manages several projects funded under Horizon 2020 dealing with and improving data protection, one of them shared their success story in an interview. Watch Sofia Rosa, coordinator of FogProtect explain their approach and deliverables.

Other success stories include:

  • FogProtect: it is developing advanced designs, technologies, and methods to secure end-to-end data protection along the computing continuum. The project integrates four technological innovations to create appropriate solutions for data protection in smart cities, industries and media.
  • SHAPES: the SHAPES Innovation Action (IA) intends to build, pilot and deploy a large-scale, EU-standardised open platform. SHAPES identifies needs ofEU citizens and provides personalised solutions that uphold the individuals’ data protection and trust. One significant outcome is the application that sends reminders for you to take your daily pills, arranges the deliveries of care proucts, and monitor remotely how your parents/grandparents are doing at home.
  • GATEKEEPER: this project aims to ensure healthier independent lives for the ageing populations. GATEKEEPER develops a collaborative framework by connecting healthcare providers, entrepreneurs, elderly citizens and the communities they live in. Parkinson, Diabetes and Stroke Prevention are some examples of the Medical Use Cases of GATEKEEPER, for which every connected device will incorporate data protection to avoid cybersecurity issues.
  • RAINBOW: the project is setting out an open and secure fog computing platform that advances the management of extensible, diverse and safe Internet of Things (IoT) services and cross-cloud applications. The project hopes to develop fog computing to its real potential by supplying the development, composition, data and network management to reach secure end applications.

Background

Horizon 2020 was the EU’s multiannual funding programme between 2014 and 2020. H2020 provided Research and Innovation (R&I) funding for multi-national collaboration projects alongside individual researchers and SMEs via special funding instruments. Horizon 2020 was replaced by the Horizon Europe Programme, which will run until 2027.
