European Hydrogen Week (20-24 November 2023): Discover HaDEA’s projects working on advanced materials for hydrogen storage

The European Hydrogen Week takes place in Brussels from 20 to 24 November 2023, showcasing the forefront of hydrogen innovations. With over 25 sessions featuring 200 speakers, the Hydrogen Week will allow participants to delve into industry trends, challenges, and cutting-edge technologies, gaining valuable insights into the future of clean energy. 

Discover four Horizon Europe projects managed by HaDEA that focus on advanced materials for hydrogen storage: 

  • AMBHER addresses short and long-term energy storage challenges arising from increased electrification. The project focuses on utilising green ammonia for renewable energy storage and introduces innovative compressed hydrogen solutions. It involves the development of novel nanoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for short-term storage and advanced materials for long-term storage. 
  • HySTrAm tackles challenges in hydrogen storage and transport, focusing on the development of physical hydrogen storage materials and a compact containerised ammonia synthesis system. The project is working to overcome hurdles hindering the broader application of hydrogen, contributing to advancements in clean energy solutions. 
  • MAST3RBoost enhances ultraporous materials, increasing hydrogen working capacity by 30% at 100 bar. The project transitions from lab-scale to industrial manufacturing, creating prototypes of activated carbons (ACs) and MOFs. Incorporating machine learning, MAST3RBoost explores recycled materials and lightweight alloys to develop an innovative type I vessel demonstrator, contributing to hydrogen storage technology evolution. 
  • MOST-H2 tackles challenges in sustainable hydrogen storage, proposing a lab-to-tank approach with monolithic MOF adsorbents for optimal capacity. Utilising advanced synthesis, computation, and machine learning, the project aims for efficient, safer, and cost-effective storage, marking a substantial stride in advancing hydrogen's viability as a clean energy carrier. 

Background

Horizon 2020 was the EU’s multiannual funding programme between 2014 and 2020. H2020 provided Research and Innovation (R&I) funding for multi-national collaboration projects alongside individual researchers and SMEs via special funding instruments. Horizon 2020 is being continued by Horizon Europe Programme, which will run until 2027.
