Hannover Messe: Six EU-funded projects of HaDEA being showcased on 18 April

Hannover Messe 2023

Six raw materials projects managed by HaDEA will present their successful results at Hannover Messe, one of the world’s largest industrial trade fairs. This event brings together leaders, innovators, and experts from around the world to showcase the latest developments and technologies and to discuss the future of industrial manufacturing.

During the fair, the European Commission will promote 5 main topics that are key for Europe’s industrial ecosystems. Critical raw materials is one of them and will be highlighted on the European Commission’s booth on 18 April.

On this occasion, discover the six raw material projects that will present their results during the “EU R&I for sustainable and efficient raw materials value chains" event:

GOLDENEYE is using remote sensing and positioning technologies along with data analytics and machine learning algorithms, with the main goal of boosting the productivity of mines by utilising Earth observation and Earth Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). This project is creating an Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform that enables the collection of high-resolution data from a mine using satellites, drones, and in situ sensors. After processing, the data will be converted into actionable intelligence for improved safety, environmental observation, exploration, exploitation, and increased extraction.

DigiEcoQuarry aims to enhance the digitalisation and automation of mining operations for greater safety, sustainability, and competitiveness by pairing artificial intelligence approaches with cyber-physical systems and the Internet of things (IoT). The goal is to sustainably increase the supply of minerals for the construction sector by implementing an Innovative Quarrying System (IQS).

NexGen-SIMS explores and scales up promising digital technologies through high-level mining pilots to demonstrate their potential to support sustainability in the mining sector. The project is looking to reduce investment risks by creating incentives for upgrading, retrofitting, and replacing carbon-neutral technologies, and introducing new innovative solutions based on the industrial IoT. The objective is to increase productivity, to secure existing raw materials production, and to unlock access to unexploited mineral resources.

SUSMAGPRO‘s main goal is to establish a pilot supply chain for recycled neodymium magnets in Europe. As most neodymium magnets in the EU come from third countries, the project aims to develop a sustainable circular economy approach and to demonstrate the effective reuse of recycled rare earth materials within various industries.

REESilience aims to create a more sustainable and resilient supply chain for rare earth magnetic materials and products in Europe. The project is developing a production system that considers geographic location, sustainable indicators, and pricing to reduce dependence on non-European economies. Additionally, the project is creating a software tool to ensure high product quality with maximum use of secondary raw materials.

ROTATE is targeting the promotion of sustainable mining by developing tools and technologies that can help companies achieve zero emissions and pollution while collecting critical raw materials. The project will also focus on waste valorisation and circular approaches to minimise environmental impact. It aims to optimise the cut-off grade and to reduce the environmental footprint, which will benefit companies and increase access to critical raw material sites.
