Two HaDEA-managed projects at the International Workshop on Converged Computing on Edge, Cloud, and HPC (WOCC'24)

OpenCUBE and RISER, funded under Horizon Europe to present their advancements in the field

HaDEA-managed projects at the International workshop on converged computing on edge, cloud, and hpc.

The second edition of the International Workshop on Converged Computing on Edge, Cloud, and HPC (WOCC'24) is taking place in Hamburg on 16 May.

Two projects managed by HaDEA will participate in the event:

OpenCUBE

OpenCUBE is setting out a full-stack solution of a validated European Cloud computing blueprint to be deployed on European hardware infrastructure. The project will provide a unified software stack that captures the different best practices and open-source tooling on the operating system, middleware, and system management level.

OpenCUBE will give a talk on container portability across computing domains, from HPC to cloud native environments, and workflow orchestration. The talk will focus on the three layers of a containerised environment, including OS, middleware, and application, and dissect their compatibility in different cloud environments, as well as their performance impact.

RISER

RISER is developing the first all-European RISC-V cloud server infrastructure, significantly enhancing Europe’s open strategic autonomy. The project is working on open-source designs for standardised form-factor system platforms that will be suitable for supporting cloud services and deploying cloud applications.

The project coordinator will give an talk on containers in Cloud and HPC clusters. The talk will explore shifting the emphasis towards the capacity to build and maintain multiple software serving specialised computational and data processing workloads. These encompass classic HPC together with Cloud and AI. This envisioned shift also highlights the ability to utilise computing nodes based on heterogeneous technologies, with complex memory and storage system requirements.

Background

Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation with a budget of €95.5 billion. It tackles climate change, helps to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and boosts the EU’s competitiveness and growth. HaDEA implements parts of Horizon Europe Clusters 1 (Health) and 4 (DigitalIndustry, and Space). It was preceded by Horizon 2020.
