CEF Digital supports the early 5G-deployment and edge infrastructure that enable use cases for public administrations, healthcare centres, schools and other education and training institutions, so-called socio-economic drivers.
The underlying 5G connectivity needed to enable the set-up of innovative solutions will help these public authorities and providers of services of general (economic) interest to become smarter, i.e. more efficient, resilient and able to adapt according to the evolving citizens’ needs, the environment, the local economy and society at large.
Projects funded under the 5G and Edge Cloud for Smart Communities topic aim to:
- Deploy 5G infrastructures capable of delivering leading-edge connectivity such as Gigabit performance, high-user-density, ubiquitous coverage, low latency and reliability.
- Bundle the deployed 5G networks with a cloud-to-edge middleware stack capable of supporting the data-intensive use cases and applications required by the involved socio-economic drivers, where necessary.
By supporting local innovations that are enabled by 5G systems, the projects will provide blueprints of digital innovation that can be replicated across Europe.
CEF funding for 5G and Edge Cloud for Smart Communities is expected to accelerate the take-up of 5G connectivity for the provision of innovative services and contribute to a wider deployment and take up of 5G at the same time.

Last week the team of the official portal for European data delivered the EU Open Data Days 2025, a two day conference that brings together data enthusiasts, policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss and showcase the power of open data. Discover HaDEA-managed projects in this field.

Connecting Europe Facility - Digital Call 4 closed on 13 February with a budget of €233 million for 5G Large-Scale Pilots and Backbone connectivity for Digital Global Gateways. It drew an impressive total of 321 partners responding with 85 proposals.

HaDEA is gearing up for the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025, happening from 3 to 6 March at Fira Gran via in Barcelona. As the world’s biggest event for the mobile communications industry, MWC brings together over 100 000 companies, government representatives, investors, and startups.

Awarded in 2022 within CEF Digital’s “backbone networks for pan-European cloud federations” topic, the project DNS4EU is deploying the first EU-wide protective DNS ecosystem for public services. This will contribute to and strengthen European sovereignty.
